Girl Gang or a brief history of Feminism in contemporary Fashion

20 August 2016

Girl Power is dead; long live the Girl Gang.

Who still thinks that Feminism is only for old, man-hating, short-haired women who quote Alice Schwarzer for Breakfast, probably didn´t go shopping in a long time. Girl or boy; If you want to be cool you gotta be a Feminist. And not only since today! For example in the 90s, Feminism was a big thing in popculture. It all started with the American Riot Grrl movement, represented by all girl bands such as Hole, Bikini Kill and Bratmobile. Not only did they address topics such as rape, patriarchy and sexuality; they also inspired girls to make music and get creative. Style wise; Riot Grrl was about coars boots combined with old-fashioned flower dresses, ragged flannel shirts, Peter Pan collars and pretty much whatever they wanted. Starting as an alternative Movement, they were soon to enter Mainstream culture; and this is where I first touched upon the topic. One of my childhood heroes was no one else than Julia Styles as Kat in 10 things I hate about you; a camouflage and baggy pants wearing, Sylvia Plath reading, Riot grrrl listening Teen from Planet Loser. If that´s not mainstream enough for you; there´s always the Spice Girls and a few hundred other Girl Bands in the late 90s. The Riot was replaced by shallow Girl Power and light messages wrapped in catchy pop beats. But, well it´s still Femism. Today, Internet Stars like Molly Soda or Musicians like Kate Nash, Lady Gaga, and well if it has to be; Beyonce (even if I definitely wouldn´t bow down, bitch,) inspire young girls to be confident, creative and dress how they like. And if it comes to fashion, the 90s brought Feminism back with them; stronger than ever. Shirts, Bodys and Patches by various Indie Designers and Fashion Stores show off bad-ass slogans and make you want to DIY! And if you don´t like it – BEAT IT CREEP!!!
Some of my favourite pieces by brands like local heroes, valfre, or indie brands like CreepyGals, Sarah Duyer & many more

Girl Power is dead; long live the Girl Gang.

Wers nicht mag – Beat it creep!!!
Anbei ein paar Anregungen von Stores wie Valfre, Local Heroes, CreepyGals, SarahDuyer & vielen mehr ;)
